Other than decorations, nothing screams the holiday season more to me than persimmons. Have your kids tried Fuyu persimmons yet? They are a delicious fruit that is a MUST for your holiday grocery list this season! Here are some tips on how to introduce persimmons to your toddler.
How to eat it: The Fuyu is a light orange-colored fruit that is firm, crisp and can be eaten just like an apple. It’s an easy fruit to add as a holiday side dish, slice into crackers or salads, cut up for a fruit medley or wash and eat as an on-the-go snack!
Types: There are two types of persimmons, astringent and non-astringent varieties. Astringent persimmons, like Kachiya, have a very bitter and long lasting taste in the mouth. If not fully ripened, this type of persimmon can make even the most adventurous eater gag! I caution parents from trying this type of persimmon with their toddlers until they are familiar with the ripening process and taste variation. Once you discover the perfect level of ripeness, they can be delicious!
Toddler Approved: The Fuyu persimmon is from the non-astringent variety, and it can be introduced to kids who like a sweet taste and crunchy texture. They are perfect for holiday food art too! Expert food art tip; when you slice persimmons sideways, they have a beautiful ‘star’ shape in the center that is adorable and festive!
Persimmon Snack Recipe
Cut persimmons into slices. Use a cookie cutter with a fun shape (I used a star shape for this blog) on the sliced persimmon. Then, coat a cracker with cream cheese and place the persimmon onto it. Drizzle the crackers with honey and sprinkle cinnamon on the top. Tada! A sweet snack that is healthy and cheerful!
