If it is your baby’s first holiday, you might be wondering what foods they can safely eat. Here are a few tips to help your baby gobble-up the traditional foods:
Turkey
- Remove skin and bones to decrease choking risk.
- Offer dark meat as it is softer and juicer than white meat. Add gravy, cranberry sauce or unsalted butter to make it moist and safer to eat.
White or Red Potatoes
- Thick or lumpy mashed potatoes can be a wonderful texture for baby. You can thin out the texture by adding more liquid (milk, butter or water). Both thick and thin textures are perfect for practicing with a baby-led spoon.
- Offer boiled or baked potato strips and add a drizzle of gravy to make them extra moist.
Sweet Potatoes
- When offering mashed sweet potato (or sweet potato casserole) be sure to remove any marshmallows, as they can be a choking risk.
- Try baking or boiling the sweet potato and removing the skin before serving. Add some unsalted butter to make the strips moist and easy to eat.
Cranberry Sauce
- If you make your cranberry sauce by scratch, set aside some for your baby without the sugar.
- Canned cranberry sauce is a soft jellied texture that can be a fun sensory experience for your little one.
Kiwi
- Don’t use a melon baller, as tiny fruit balls can be a choking risk.
- Use a peeler and remove the furry skin. Cut the kiwi into strips or cubes.
Expert Tip: To make holiday treats a size and shape that is safer for your baby, we recommend using the ezpz Baby-Led Weaning Food Cutters. Depending on your baby’s age, the cutters can cut soft foods into strips (6 mos+) or cubes (9 mos+) that are easy-to-hold and munch!
