Baby-led weaning (BLW) is a feeding approach where babies are introduced to solid foods by eating the same foods as the rest of the family. Once baby is ready to start solids, babies feed themselves with a baby-led™ spoon or by picking up soft strips of food with their hands (instead of being spoon-fed purées by an adult).
Here are three tips on choosing the right foods for baby-led weaning.
1. Pick foods that are soft and ripe, such as avocado.
2. Choose foods that can be cut in long strips to make it easy for baby to pick-up and hold, such as honeydew.
Early eaters (6-9 months of age) use the palmar grasp to hold food in their hand and bring it to their mouth. Foods that are strip-shaped—about the length and thickness of an adult pinky finger—allow infants to grasp and handle the food easily.
3. Cut food with the Baby-Led Weaning Food Cutters (pictured below is tofu*) to ensure food is the perfect size and shape for your baby's development. Plus, the serrated edges make it easy for baby to grasp.
*Tofu is a potentially allergenic food.
Let baby enjoy!
