Unicorn-themed parties, play dates and sleepovers are so in style right now. Join the fairytale rage by using these three sensory recipes inspired by unicorns! They are sure to make any party magical.
Unicorn Fruit Dip: Whether it is for an afterschool snack, a family gathering or a party, dips are a perfect snack for kids to learn to enjoy fruits and vegetables. At our gathering the kiddos wanted kiwi, watermelon and cantaloupe (pictured). Giving the dip a name or having a dip ‘theme’ makes it more interesting for children and encourages them to be more adventurous. Get your kids in the kitchen to make my easy Unicorn Fruit Dip…and watch it magically disappear!
Ingredients:
- Whipped cream cheese (you can use softened regular cream cheese, but whipped cream cheese is easier for kids to stir if you are having them help)
- Food coloring (store bought or homemade)
- Sprinkles
- Fruit and veggies to dunk
Directions:
Place all of the ingredients in a contained and easy-to-clean space like the Play Mat; kids can get a bit messy with food coloring! Next have your kids put the cream cheese in several small bowls. Add a few drops of food coloring to each bowl (in our example the kids picked neon pink, green and blue). In a larger, separate bowl combine each color and stir gently to make a flamboyantly fun unicorn dip. Have the kiddos dunk away!
Unicorn Bark: Yogurt bark is a delicious cold treat that can easily replace ice cream at parties. Since yogurt bark is so simple to make, the kids can create it together and then enjoy eating their enchanted masterpiece!
Ingredients:
- Yogurt (I have used coconut, Greek and Goat yogurt with good results)
- Food coloring (store bought or homemade)
- Sprinkles
Directions:
Spread a thin layer of yogurt on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper, or place the yogurt directly on the Play Mat. Put a drop of food coloring every few inches and spread the food coloring with a toothpick. Choose bright hues of pink, purple and blue for a unicorn theme. Sprinkle a few candy pieces on top and place the sheet / Play Mat in the freezer for about an hour. Having such a beautiful display of yogurt bark will entice even the pickiest eater to take a bite of this protein-enriched snack!
Unicorn Sensory Play: Sensory play isn’t just important for children with special needs or sensory integration disorder. All kids benefit from sensory play because all children learn through their senses! Sensory play also allows picky eaters to learn about different textures of food. That is why I love this unicorn-themed sensory recipe!
Ingredients:
- Whipped cream or Cool Whip
- Food coloring (store bought or homemade)
- Sprinkles
Directions:
Place a scoop of whipped cream or Cool Whip onto the Play Mat. Add a drop of unicorn colored food coloring to increase the sensory experience. Then have your child explore this new tactile environment with their hands, feet, tongue or even their hair (as you can see in the picture!). Such a riot!
I hope you enjoy diving into this magical world of unicorn colors and imaginative recipes! How do you help your children with the sensory aspects of food? #ezpzfun #unicorn #sensoryplay
